“Never be lazy, but work hard and serve the Lord enthusiastically.” Romans 12:11
Years ago, my Sunday School teacher and I were checking on families who hadn’t been to church in a very long time.
As a young Christian in my twenties, I listened intently as they reminisced about the days when they taught Sunday school, sang in the church choir, served in the nursery…………., and I found myself wondering, “What happened? Why aren’t they serving the Lord today? When I get old, will the same thing happen to me, too?” I took those thoughts to heart. These were people who once worked hard and served the Lord enthusiastically, but who let their zeal slacken and serving God became a thing of the past.
A few years later, on a Sunday morning, I sat at the kitchen table eating watermelon and watching “I Love Lucy.” My family and I would have been in church, but we stayed home to pack before leaving on vacation. As I sat there, the thought crossed my mind, “Skipping church is kinda fun. I could get used to this.” No sooner had that thought entered my mind, I immediately remembered the families we visited, the questions I pondered, and I felt the Lord speak into my heart, “Deb, that’s how it starts. One decision at a time to choose other things over Me.” The decision to stay home wasn’t the problem, it was my heart. My heart was willing to get used to the idea.
That morning at my kitchen table was a defining moment for me. I firmly believe had I listened to my heart, my life would have taken a different turn. Instead, I chose to choose God over anything this world has to offer. A decision I have never regretted.
If you have let your zeal slacken and serving God has become a thing of the past, I encourage you to turn your heart back to God while you still have today, serve the Lord your God, and obey His voice for the rest of your life.
Great is God’s Faithfulness 💚 Deb
