Everywhere you turn, people seem to be searching for identity and purpose. Magazines, books, blogs, podcasts, and friends are eager to help you to discover yourself, but what do they really know? Why base your identity and sense of self-worth on the opinions of other flawed things and beings when God’s view of you is the only one that matters?

The most important question we can ask concerning our identity is this: Who does God say that I am? And the Bible contains the only reliable answers about who you are!

The next time you wish you were more beautiful, successful, loved, acknowledged, valued, affirmed, accepted, content, or wish you had a sense of purpose, belonging or future, turn to the Bible and let God remind you of who you are!

I AM HIS BELOVED CHILD! “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” 1 John 2:1

I AM CHOSEN AND ADOPTED THROUGH JESUS TO BE HIS CHILD FOREVER! “Even before He made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in His eyes. God decided in advance to adopt us into His own family by bringing us to Himself through Jesus Christ. That is what He wanted to do, and it gave Him great pleasure. So we praise God for the glorious grace He has poured out on us who belong to His dear Son.” Ephesians 1:4-6

I AM VALUABLE! “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago.”

I AM REDEEMED! “He is so rich in kindness and grace that He purchased our freedom with the blood of His Son and forgave our sins.”

I AM A NEW PERSON IN JESUS CHRIST! “This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!”

I AM HIS FRIEND!. “I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.”

I AM HIS AMBASSADOR! “So we are Christ’s ambassadors, God making His appeal as it were through us. We [as Christ’s personal representatives] beg you for His sake to lay hold of the divine favor [now offered you] and be reconciled to God.” 2 Corinthians 5:20

I AM HIS LIGHT IN THE DARKNESS! “For once you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord; walk as children of Light [lead the lives of those native-born to the Light].” Ephesians 5:8

I AM HIS WITNESS TO THE WORLD! “But you shall receive power (ability, efficiency, and might) when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you shall be My witnesses in Jerusalem and all Judea and Samaria and to the ends (the very bounds) of the earth.” Acts 1:8

I AM HIS DISCIPLE! “Go then and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,” Matthew 28:19

I AM A MEMBER OF JESUS CHRIST’S BODY! “And this is God’s plan: Both Gentiles and Jews who believe the Good News share equally in the riches inherited by God’s children. Both are part of the same body, and both enjoy the promise of blessings because they belong to Christ Jesus:” Ephesians 3:6

I AM AN HEIR TO HIS KINGDOM! “Therefore, you are no longer a slave (bond servant) but a son; and if a son, then [it follows that you are] an heir by the aid of God, through Christ.” Galatians 4:7

I AM EXCEEDINGLY LOVED! “God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners” Romans 5:8

Great is God’s Faithfulness! Deb

  1. Wow! Such wonderful reminders of what we are in Christ. We can get so fixated on measuring ourselves against the world’s standards but the one that truly matters is what God says of us.
    Very encouraging Deb.

  2. It is much needed to go to God’s Word and be reminded of who we are. The world throws many suggestions our way but God’s Word is our final authority. Thanks Deb.
