I made a life-changing decision three months ago.  I decided to quit coloring my hair!  Yep, I am going to own and embrace my gray!

Once I made the decision, I Googled, “How to Go Gray.”  Strange, I know, but I needed some help!

Believe it or not, there are numerous YouTube videos on “How to Go Gray,” so I watched a few of them.

Tips for going gray range from shaving your head and starting over to expensive monthly visits to the hairdresser, neither of which I am interested in doing.  So, I opted for the old-fashioned, natural way – Grow it out!

At first, I was a little nervous about growing it out because I was afraid I would have a definite demarcation line between the gray and my color, but as it turns out, the new growth is salt and pepper, which is an answer to prayer!

Something else I learned about going gray, is you have to tell people.  I thought that was an excellent idea for two reasons:  (1) I didn’t want people glancing at my roots and look away, thinking, “Humm, I wonder if  Mrs. Deb knows how tacky her roots look?” and (2) I have made this decision before. Still, after a few gray hairs, I would change my mind and go for the color, but not this time! I am committed, and now I am accountable for what I said I was going to do!  I can’t back down now!

I like being on the receiving and giving end of accountability for many reasons:

  1. Support and encouragement
  2. Honesty
  3. Transparency
  4. Greater chance for success
  5. Keeps me grounded and focused on my goal
  6. Follow through on my commitments knowing others are cheering me on
  7. Makes me stronger

No matter where you are in life, strive for accountability.  Always have a teacher, a student, and a friend..…a Paul, a Timothy, and a Barnabas…….to be accountable to and to hold accountable. And above all, remember each one of us will one day give an account of ourselves to God (Romans 14:12).

Now, I’ve told you, and in due time, I will change my profile picture to reflect my new crown of glory! (Proverbs 16:31)

  2. I remember my mum wondering how to go grey too and after some thought decided to just let it grow out. One of the ladies at church did the same and she said I am not growing grey( she felt grey sounded so boring). She would say I am gaining a silver crown.
    Strive for accountability no matter where we are in life. Have a teacher, a student and a friend. I remember my pastor saying something similar. I do think it is so very important to have people in our life who we are accountable to.

  3. Love it! Embrace who you are! After all, gray is supposed to equal wisdom gained in life. I have personally never colored my hair. Most people look at me in shock on that one. I just never had the notion, probably mostly due to watching my mom nearly melt hers with rather…frequent fiddling. 🙂 I keep expecting my grays, ready to welcome them. With my life, I thought I’d have reached them long ago! Lol. But, I guess, all in due time.

    When people point out that I have gray hair, I just tell them I have earned every one of them! 😆😁👵🏻💁🏼‍♀️

  6. I should do what you’re doing with my hair! I’ve wondered when to finally start looking – and sometimes ACTING!! – my age. I really love your encouragement concerning accountability. That’s very important to all of us in so many ways. Blessings to you, from head to toe!

  13. I love this. I’ve watched those YouTube videos about going grey, and like you didn’t find the options realistic for me. I applaud you Deb. For as soon as I see the grey, I run for color (maybe I should run for cover!) Anyway, I pray a wonder-filled transition for you and look forward to hearing about your adventure. Who knows, maybe I’ll be encouraged to take this step as well. Blessings! ♥
