Tests

In school,  I was not the best test taker.  I had sweaty palms and a racing heart on test day. Not because I had neglected to study, but because I was afraid I wouldn’t remember or know the correct answers!

While others were turning in their 50-question test after 15 minutes, I was still on question 15, watching the clock! I never understood how anyone could finish a test that quickly! Maybe some of you can enlighten me!

As much as I dread tests, I know they are necessary to gauge our intellectual learning as well as our spiritual growth.  God, the Master Teacher, tests us daily to see if we are going to keep His instructions.

In the wilderness He fed you manna which your fathers did not know, that He might humble you and that He might test you, to do good for you in the end.  Deuteronomy 8:16

Although God is speaking to the nation of Israel, this verse rings true to us today.   God will use whatever is necessary to humble and test us when we need it, which us always for our good in the end.

A few months ago, I got a speeding ticket!  I was going 23 mph over the speed limit!  I had just turned off the highway, where I had been driving 65 mph, onto a road where the speed limit is 35 mph.  I was not paying a lick of attention to the speed limit sign as I resumed my speed.  I hadn’t entirely made it to 60 mph when the officer pulled me over, going 58 mph in a 35 mph zone.  I was pretty upset with myself for being so careless.

On my way home, I had to confess that I had been fudging on the speed limit.  If it was 70 mph, I set my cruise control at 73-74, and if it was 65 mph, I set it at 68-69.  God knew what I was doing, and He had given me ample opportunities that day to follow His instructions, but when I didn’t, He used the officer to get my attention.

I failed the speed test and endured the consequences of a speeding ticket. But in the end, I experienced God’s loving discipline and sweet forgiveness.

For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but He disciplines us for our good, so that we may share His holiness. All discipline for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful; yet to those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness.”  Hebrews 12:10-11.
