Hell on Earth

background blaze blazing bonfireWhat does the phrase “hell on earth” mean to you? I wasn’t sure myself, so I looked up the definition, and it goes something like this:

“Emphasizing that a place or a situation is extremely unpleasant or causes great suffering.”

I’ve never experienced unpleasantness or suffering to the extent that I would say it was “hell on earth”, but there is one thing that I can think of that would be “hell on earth” for me, and that would be seeking the word of the Lord and not being able to find it.

In the book of Amos, Amos prophesized a day would come, in captivity, when the children of Israel would long for the words of the LORD, which they had ignored in prosperity and they would not be able to find it.

“Behold, days are coming,” declares the Lord GOD, “When I will send a famine on the land. Not a famine for bread or a thirst for water, but rather for hearing the words of the Lord. People will stagger from sea to sea and from the north even to the east; they will go to and fro to seek the word of the LORD, but they will not find it.” Amos 8:11-12

Their inability to find the word of the Lord would be the result of their social evils as well as their paganized worship.  Amos issued an urgent call to repentance as the only escape from imminent judgment.

Today God issues an urgent call to repentance as the only escape from imminent judgment.

According to the Bible, to name a few descriptions, Hell is:

  • A real place reserved for those who do not accept Jesus Christ as their Savior  (I Thessalonians 1:8-9)
  • A lake of fire (Luke 16:24)
  • Outer darkness (Matthew 8:12)
  • A prison (I Peter 3:19)
  • Eternal punishment (Matthew 25:46)
  • The absence of God (2 Thessalonians 1:8-9)

Hell will consist of not only the physical torture but the agony of being cut off from every avenue to God. Those in hell have forever lost the chance to see God’s face, hear His voice, experience His forgiveness, or experience His fellowship.

To be eternally separated from God in death is the ultimate punishment.

As long as you and I are breathing, God gives us the opportunity to escape the absence of His presence.  The first step is to receive His salvation to all who call upon His Name.

  1. We need His Word everyday! I like to place Bible verses in different places so I can have His Word in front of me. Thanks for this reminder!
