One of my widow friends sighs with disgust, mummers under her breath, or leaves the worship service whenever we sing, “It Is Well With My Soul” because it was one of the hymns at her late husband’s funeral. She commented to me one day that she didn’t understand why we sang that song so much in church. Until that comment, I didn’t realize that we do sing it a lot!
Sunday morning the instruments played, “It Is Well With My Soul” for the offertory. My friend didn’t get up to leave, but she moaned. I started to lean over and gently say, “Maybe God is waiting for you to tell Him it is well with your soul since your husband died,” until I felt the Holy Spirit ask me, “When are you going to tell Me it is well with your soul?” Ouch! I had to confess it wasn’t well with my soul and let go of the last few pieces of a dream that shattered months ago.
Life is hard BUT God is good and everything He does is good. When life does not feel good, remember…………………
- God is completing His work in your life. “For I am confident of this very thing. He who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Christ Jesus.” Philippians 1:6
- Trust God. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6
- Put your hope in God. “Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope inGod! I will praise Him again, my Savior and my God!” Psalms 42:5
- Praise God. “Praise the Lord, for He has heard my cry for mercy.” Psalms 28:6
