My Reflection

Wouldn’t it be nice if when we got saved, we no longer struggle with sin?  Am I the only one, or do you wrestle with sin, too? Most days, I wish I could unzip my flesh and hang it up in the closet, or better yet, destroy it.

Believe it or not, there is a way to destroy the flesh, put it to death by yielding to the Holy Spirit.

“But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh.  For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please.”  Galatians 5:16-17.

If you aren’t a Christian, you may not know who the Holy Spirit is, so I will step into parentheses to explain.

When you accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior, God sends His Holy Spirit to dwell in you; to be your Helper and to give you a new nature.  Your old nature (the flesh) doesn’t go away and doesn’t go down willingly.  That’s why Christians wrestle with sin.  There is a war going on inside of you between the flesh and the Spirit; both wanting to be in control.  My Sunday School taught me, the one who wins the battle is the one I say to “sic ’em.”  🙂

In Romans 7:21-25, the Apostle Paul describes his personal struggle against the sinful nature.  Paul knew what it was like to want to do good, but end up doing the very thing he didn’t want to do!  It is a daily challenge to submit to God’s path rather than taking the road of least resistance.  It’s easier to give in to the temptation to sin rather than to give way to the Holy Spirit; hard, but not impossible!

When you look in the mirror, who do you see?  Who is in control of your life?  Christian, we won’t get it right 100% of the time, but keep striving.  Walk in the Spirit, and you will put to death the desires of the flesh.  Or walk in the flesh and you will put to death the desires of the Spirit.  The choice is yours.
